The Shadow Self

Many kids lead conflicting lives. For these kids, high school can be a constant struggle to balance who they want to be with who they are expected to be. So, in reality high school is way more than just learning within a classroom.

As an opening activity for John Knowles novel, A Separate Peace, an RLHS student completed this drawing to depict the constant struggle to find the balance between his or her internal and external self identity.  Throughout the novel, students will have a chance to try to understand their own difficult choices in relation to the protagonist Gene who is a sixteen-year-old boy at boarding school in New Hampshire during World War II, and the mixed feelings of admiration and jealousy he harbors for his best friend and roommate.
